Program Intervention

ISHDO has been achieving successful results in its endeavors and created lasting impacts or sustainable changes, through its various program interventions, as briefly described below.

The organization has been able to provide effective and tailored HIV services for thousands of individuals who are affected by or vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection.

Our services include prevention initiatives, care and support for OVCs (Orphans and Vulnerable Children), nutrition for those who are malnourished, and micronutrient support for children under five and pregnant women. We also provide HIV tests and treatments particularly for CSW in Drop-in-Centers.

Additional interventions under the health development program include ARH/FP and ARH services, neonatal health services, water line connection, and sanitation and hygiene programs.

The organization supports Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) and children from low-income families to meet needs. This would include providing learning materials, school uniforms and tutorial services.

The organization has also carried out the Construction of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centers, school libraries and children centers, and renovations and construction of additional classrooms at selected primary schools.

ISHDO has worked to support family members of vulnerable girls throughout twenty-six primary and secondary schools. This initiative is meant to oversee ISHDO’s goals of long-term prevention of early marriage and gender-based violence amongst adolescent girls.

ISHDO’s livelihood and economic strengthening program has been implemented for more than two decades. Services are provided to low-income women, youth, and commercial sex workers (CSWs). These services also reach orphans/vulnerable children (OVCs) and guardians that have positively affected the lives of their families.

Thousands of targeted people were supported during their enrollment in vocational skills training. These programs teach livelihood skills such as tie and dye, hair dressing, construction, food preparation, and more.

Several of ISHDO’s beneficiaries have turned their lives around through vegetable gardening, poultry, sheep rearing and fattening, saving, and credit schemes. The program is also accompanied by the provision of basic business skills training, provision of initial capital, study visits for selected target groups, technical support from the staff and funding agencies.

ISHDO applies a right based approach to development to assure that human rights and democracies are respected in all its program interventions.

ISHDO plans to initiate projects that are directly related to democratization processes such as advancement of human rights education and advocating on the implementation of basic needs.

In this regard the organization has been implementing a conflict resolution and peace building intervention with the Ministry of Peace in the Kolfe Sub Cities of Addis Ababa City Administration.

ISHDO was able to reach several out-of-school youths to participate in youth dialogue sessions. These sessions review peaceful coexistence practices and teach dialogue as a preventative measure for conflict. This intervention will be scaled up shortly to other locations with additional funding from UNDP.

ISHDO is additionally establishing a new partnership with WORLD BANK.

In line with its gender transformation program, ISHDO has implemented projects on prevention of early child marriages and gender-based violence among adolescent girls in school. ISHDO has reached two sub cities of Addis Ababa, Aleta Wendo and Aleta Chiko (towns of the current Sidama Regional State). Since 2019 ISHDO has worked on implementing a similar project in two districts of the Northern Shoa Zone of the Amhara region.

These interventions target female students and aim to support their pursuit of the knowledge and skills required to prevent and protect themselves from violences of any nature.

MULU/KP, Family Focused HIV Prevention and Care and Treatment Services have GBV prevention as major components of the intervention.
